Administrative History

The Y Weekly was a local newspaper serving Oak Hill (which has since been absorbed into the Austin city limits) and Sunset Valley in Travis County, Texas. The newspaper published its first issue on September 21, 1983 with the headline "New Paper Intends to Serve Area Residents and Businesses." The owner and publisher was Jerry Angerman, and the editor was Maryanne Awtrey Mariotti. After two years of free circulation the paper converted to paid circulation in 1985. The Y Weekly continued to be published weekly on Wednesdays until its last issue on May 24, 1989 citing that the decision to cease publication "was a reflection of the economy's impact on small business."

Scope and Contents

The collection contains the clip (subject) and photo files used in the publication of the newspaper and are dated from 1979 to 1989. The clip files include handwritten notes, newspaper articles, City of Austin memorandum and City Council meeting minutes, correspondence, press releases and other types of distributed information regarding local issues and people. Topics covered are education, transportation, development, health care, energy and wastewater. The photograph files are predominately biographical and include politicians, business people and celebrities. In addition there are several negative strips with images of restaurants (Barbara Ellen Hill Country Restaurant, Jim's Restaurant, Lakeway Inn), sports, lake scenes and unidentified people.
