An Inventory of the Collection
On March 8, 1962 a group of wives of members of the Downtown Rotary Club of Austin met at the home of Mrs. O. L. Alexander for the purpose of discussing the organization of the women of Rotary. They held their first luncheon meeting March 27, 1962 at Green Pastures, where it was voted to name the organization "Ro-Anns". The purpose of the organization was to foster friendship and fellowship among wives and widows of Downtown Austin Rotarians. In 1987 the United States Supreme Court confirmed the California decision that Rotary Clubs are business establishments subject to regulation under California's Unruh Civil Rights Act, which bans discrimination based on race, gender, religion or ethnic origin and the Ro-Anns changed the bylaws to reflect "spouse" membership. The Ro-Anns held monthly meetings from September to May that generally included a variety of different programs.
The collection of the Ro-Anns consists mainly of documents related to the organization, including financial and administrative records, membership records, meeting minutes, event flyers, scrapbooks and yearbooks dating from 1962 to 1997. The meeting minutes span the date range of the collection and provide the most consistent insight into the group's activities. The types of materials included with the meeting minutes (or secretary's notes as they were called for a short period) changes throughout the years but generally consisted of treasurer's reports and membership lists along with the actual minutes of the meetings. Some years the meeting minute binders included additional materials such as photographs, yearbooks, event flyers and cards received by the club and in other years separate scrapbooks were made with these types of materials and the meeting minutes contained only documents related to club business. The scrapbooks span the years of 1987-1993 and are mostly composed of photographs but also contain newspaper clippings related to Ro-Anns events, yearbooks, event flyers, treasurer's reports and the 1991-1992 scrapbook contains the meeting minutes for that year. The collection also contains a full run of yearbooks dating from 1962-1996 which document membership and types of programs and events that were sponsored by the club.
