Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, Embassy Chapter RecordsAn Inventory of the Collection
Administrative HistoryThe Colonial Dames of XVII Century, Embassy chapter is the Austin chapter of a national patriotic and historical society made up of women that can prove that they are a lineal descendant of an ancestor who lived and served prior to 1701 in one of the Original Colonies in the geographical area of the present United States of America. Membership is in the National Society but members join through Chapters. The Embassy chapter was organized by Mrs. Marinda Middleton on September 22, 1941 with 27 charter members. Mrs. Middleton was the president of the Texas Society of Colonial Dames of the XVII Century when she organized the local chapter. The chapter was named for the French Legation that dates from the Republic of Texas and was called (somewhat erroneously) "The Embassy" by the citizens of Austin because it once served as the residence and office of the Dubois de Saligny (who was not the French ambassador to the Republic, but rather a chargé d'affaires which is lower than an ambassador or minister in the diplomatic hierarchy). The Colonial Dames meet monthly and the meetings generally include a program/presentation by a member or an outside speaker. The organization also donates books (especially historical and genealogical materials) to schools and libraries, establishes and maintains scholarship funds, and conducts genealogical and historical research.
