UT 10 Collection
An Inventory of the Collection
During the 1990’s a student group called the Asian Relations Committee (ARC) and later, the Asian American Relations Group (AARG) worked to bring an Asian American Studies program to The University of Texas at Austin. In response to the activism of students and faculty, administrators put in place a search committee to find a director to head the program. Tensions arose between students, faculty, and administration during the selection process, which led to a sit-in at the West Mall Office Building and the eventual arrest of ten students. Those ten students were named the “UT 10” and were instrumental in pushing for the creation of the Center for Asian American Studies and the hiring of a permanent director. The materials in this collection were files and records kept by members of the UT 10 and other students as well as the Center for Asian American Studies.
This collection is comprised of documents, correspondence, minutes, articles, flyers, and general material related to the “UT 10” as well as the early years of the founding of the Center for Asian American Studies at UT-Austin. Also in the collection are audio/visual materials including seven oral history recordings, three recordings of “Chutney Bubble Tea Half Hour” radio show, several recordings of AROC and AARG meetings with administrators, and a video of the UT 10 panel in 2010. A few photographs of AROC and AARG activists are also part of the collection. In addition, there are three folders of documents and articles spanning from 1994-2006 regarding affirmative action, UT’s reaction to the Hopwood v. Texas decision, and demonstrations and sit-ins that provided students with background information to advocate for Asian American studies.
