Hall Family PapersAn Inventory of the Collection
Biographical NoteElisha Hall (1799-1879) was born in North Carolina. He married Anne Anderson Guilliford (1802-1981) of Tennessee in 1822. It is unknown when the family moved to Austin but there are records of Elisha renting a lot in the City of Austin in 1838 and paying taxes for property in the city in the late 1850s. The couple had eight children: Susan Anne, James Guilliford, Andrew Dickinson, Lucinda, Marion Proctor, Mary Eatherly, Allen Franklin, and Elizabeth Priscilla. Both Elisha and Anne are buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Marion Proctor (M. P.) Hall (1831-1912) was born in Tennessee. He is alternately listed as a carpenter and a florist (and sometimes both) in the 1872 through 1905 Austin City Directories. He married Amanda Roberta Hurling Fowler (1843-1919) of Webberville, Texas in 1865. The couple had four children: Edgar Renfro, Walter Morris, Etta, and Maud Ethel. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThe small collection of materials dating from the 1850s through 1910 documents the lives of Elisha and Marion Proctor Hall while they lived in Austin, Texas. Included are Travis County and City of Austin property tax receipts for various properties owned by Elisha and M. P. Hall dating from 1859-1910. Some of the receipts provide a breakdown of how the assessed tax was distributed between the state, county and city as well as the tax rate used to calculate what was owed. Additional property related items are a building permit for a property in Hyde Park and invoices from lumber and hardware stores. Also included are funeral programs dating from the late 1800s for several family members as well as postcards dating from the first decade of 1900 from the Friends in Need Society of Austin and the National Burial Association notifying the Halls that assessments were due. Also of interest are a War Tax receipt from 1862 that notes that the tax was paid using Confederate Treasury Notes and an Oath of Amnesty signed by Elisha Hall in September of 1865. Legal records include rental contract for a lot in Austin signed by Elisha in 1838 as well as his will dated 1876. Return to the Table of Contents
