Administrative History

Susan and Rob Burneson began organizing the Voices of the Violet Crown project in early 2003 as an effort to preserve the stories of community spirit in Central Austin. The project began as community and history exhibits that have been featured at Violet Crown Community Works events from 2003-2010 and 2013, including the Violet Crown Festival. In addition the Burnesons conducted oral history interviews in 2007-2011; created a neighborhood history booklet From Abercrombie to the Violet Crown; and completed three films, First Night W/ Domino & Friends (2006), A Community Mosaic (2008), and We Planted 115 Trees (2011). Susan Burneson was a founding board member of the nonprofit, Violet Crown Community Works, co-founder and coordinator of the Community Tent and publicity for the Violet Crown Festival, and was in charge of the history research collaboration, award proposal writing, and publicity for the Wall of Welcome. She also served on the Crestview Neighborhood Association Executive Committee from 2010-2011 and on the Crestview Neighborhood Association Newsletter Committee from 2008-2011. Susan and Rob Burneson together founded and coordinated the Voices of the Violet Crown project. They worked towards a goal of continuing the tradition of active community projects since the establishment of the neighborhoods in the late 1940s as well as building bridges between new and longtime neighbors.
