Lance Corporal Nicholas Samuel Valdez Perez Papers
An Inventory of the Collection
Nicholas Samuel Valdez Perez was born in Austin, Texas on July 6, 1985 and he graduated from Travis High School in May of 2003. Perez was interested in pursuing a career in the military from an early age and transferred from LBJ High School to Travis High School so he could enroll in the ROTC program. He joined the United States Marine Corps in July 2003. He was killed in action while conducting military maneuvers in Iraq's Anbar province on September 3, 2004. Nicholas had earned a Purple Heart before his death.
The collection consists of materials gathered by the veterans' group Tejanos In Action to nominate Lance Corporal Nicholas Samuel Valdez Perez for naming of a school in his behalf. The nomination requested to have the Southeast Elementary School at 7500 South Pleasant Valley Road, Austin, Texas named in honor of Perez, the first United States soldier from Austin, Texas killed in combat in the war in Iraq. The majority of the collection consists of letters written by more than 300 people to the Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees in support of the nomination. Also included are the official nomination form and the supporting documentation, a photo of Perez and several photos of the collection being donated to the Austin History Center by Perez's parents.
