Scope and Contents

The collection consists of documents dating from 1962-2004 that David McHam collected in preparation to write a book about John Henry Faulk. Textual materials include correspondence from John Henry Faulk and Liz Faulk to McHam, flyers and programs for Faulk appearances, papers written about Faulk by McHam's students, and newspaper and magazine clippings about Faulk's life. The newspaper and magazine clippings cover a broad range of topics such as Faulk's libel suit against Aware, Inc., his bid for a congressional seat, "The Man That Beat the Blacklist" and "Fear on Trial" (two television programs about Faulk), the Freedom of Information Foundation, Louis Nizer, Roy Cohn, and J. R. Parten. Also included is what was supposed to be the first in a series of video taped interviews between McHam and Faulk that was conducted in Houston on June 11, 1988. Because of Faulk's illness the additional interviews did not take place but the original interview contains information about Faulk's early life, his time at the University of Texas and his friendship with J. Frank Dobie. In addition there are audio recordings of an interview between Faulk and McHam in 1975, Faulk speaking at the Dallas/Tarrant County Trial Lawyers Association meeting in 1984 as well as an interview of Faulk by Linda Dailey (one of McHam's students) also in 1984.
