Biographical Note

Birdie Marie Cherico grew up in Austin with her parents John and Ida (Frey) Cherico and 3 siblings. Birdie was born on August 26, 1907, graduated from John T. Allan junior high school on June 1, 1922 and from Austin Public High School in January of 1925. Upon her high school graduation she was awarded a Board of Regents scholarship in 1925 that entitled her to an exemption from the matriculation fee at the University of Texas. The scholarship was offered to only the student of the highest standing among their gender in the graduation class of each high school. She then graduated from The University of Texas with a Bachelor of Arts in 1929. Phi Beta Kappa honors for scholastic excellence were bestowed upon her in 1929. After college she taught physical education at Orange High School and it is in Orange, Texas that she met Mr. Morris Scheid. The two married on September 9, 1933 in Dallas, Texas.

Birdie returned to Austin with her husband in 1939, and they built their home in Brykerwoods. When Birdie was 40, the Scheids adopted two children, a boy and a girl, ages 1 and 2, that were natural brother and sister. Birdie taught school in Austin Independent School District for 25 years at schools such as Pease, O'Henry and Brykerwood. Birdie died October 29, 1996 in Austin, Texas.
