Capital City Scribes RecordsAn Inventory of the Collection
Administrative HistoryCapital City Scribes was formed in early 1983 after Thelma Matthews, manager of the art department of the University Co-op East which was the only source of calligraphic supplies in Austin at the time, brought together a group of seven calligraphic customers. Paula Webb served as the first president with Carol Sims, Anne Boykin, Joan Kilpatrick and Barbara Whitehead serving on the first board. Anne Boykin designed the guild's logo, a quill with an ink bottle in the shape of the capitol dome. Over the years Capital City Scribes has sponsored workshops by both local and internationally known calligraphers. They also host events that feature a wide variety of topics from lettering forms to papermaking, watercolor, design layout and book arts. In an effort to bolster lagging membership the guild changed the organization's format to a team structure. Each team of four hosts one meeting a year, plans the program, prepares refreshments, and creates and mails an invitation and a brief Communiqué that took the place of the more formal newsletter the Capital Letter.
