Administrative History

The student cooperative (co-op) movement in Texas began during the Depression at Texas A&M in College Station, in 1931. By the mid-1930s, the number of A&M students living in cooperatively had grown to 1300 and the university's co-op system had become a national model. The A&M co-ops, however, were short-lived: by World War II they had vanished.

In the fall of 1936, the University of Texas at Austin (UT) followed in A&M's stead and opened its first co-op residences. In an effort to mitigate their financial burdens brought on by the Depression, both men and women students rented large houses in west campus. Assistant Dean of Men, Arno Nowotny, guided the men in founding the Campus Guild; Dean of Women, Dorothy Gebauer, assisted 12 women in establishing Halstead House at 100 East 26th Street.

Subsequent men's houses included TLOK (1939-1970s; acronym for The Lord Only Knows); Shangri-la (1937); and Theleme (ca. 1941; now known as Helios).

Women's co-ops founded after Halstead include Valhalla (1937); Wakonda (1939); Theodorne (1939); Powell (circa 1950-1951; renamed Gebauer for Dorothy Gebauer circa 1967-1968); Pearce (1952); Almetris (1956); Felicia (circa 1957-1958); Century Co-op (1963); Smith (circa lat e 1960s); Margaret Peck (circa 1953, first as Whitis Co-op, then renamed for the dean of women, circa 1960s); Century House (1958; originally called Parrish House, renamed in 1964); Whitehall (date not found).

The men could live in one of two types of houses: in one, the men themselves rented the house, owned the furniture, and employed a housemother, maid, and cook. Each resident had his own duties, as well. In the other type, the men rented a house from a housemother, who furnished the house, and planned and prepared the meals. The women's houses were entirely under the supervision of the Dean of Women. In each house, the residents elected from among their groups a coordinator who performed many of the same administrative duties as a housemother, and someone to keep the house books, which were audited monthly by the Auditor for Student Organizations. The women performed all of the duties of the house: cooking, cleaning, and collecting rent. They purchased their groceries through the Students' Co-operative Association to which each house belonged.

In 1939, the Inter-Cooperative Council (ICC) was organized. The organization served as an informal liaison between the university and the co-ops. It organized social events and meetings, and advocated for co-op issues. Membership consisted of two representatives from each house.

Between 1940 and 1941, the UT campus had 20 co-ops housing 500 students. Between 1940 and 1945, many of the male students left campus for the war and 13 of their co-ops shut down. One, Shangri-la, was converted to a women's co-op.

In 1952 UT built six partially air-conditioned women's co-ops to be overseen by the Division of Housing and Food. This effort was led by Dean Gebauer using a grant from the Jack and Katherine Pearce Education Foundation (Galveston). The co-op students who moved into them included those from Shangri-la, Wakonda, Pearce, Theadorne, Valhalla, and Halstead. Residents in these buildings were subjected to more restrictive limits, such as curfews and limits on guests, than their off-campus counterparts. In 1969 six additional air-conditioned women's houses were constructed by UT at 26th and Whitis. These were meant to compensate for the destruction of other off campus co-op houses when UT needed to expand its campus.

UT began admitting African-American students in the fall of 1956. The ICC voted unanimously to integrate all of the co-ops, although UT itself had planned to segregate housing. Almetris co-op was founded, named for its housemother, Almetris Marsh Duren, and housed only African-American students. First located near Tillotson College in Austin, it moved to 26th and Whitis Street in 1958.

College House was formed in 1964 as a project of student government to create co-operative university housing. In 1970 members of several off-campus co-ops incorporated the ICC. These two organizations shared a mission to buy property in the west campus area to be used as inexpensive, co-operatively run housing for university students and others.

In the summer of 1998, the Women's Co-Ops were forced to open to male residents. Wakonda was converted to a men's house, while the remaining eleven co-ops housed women.

Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection is comprised of scrapbooks made by the women's co-op residents from the 1930s until the 2000s. The scrapbooks contain a variety of materials, including photographs, newspaper clippings about the residents and campus life, letters, cards, and invitations. The rest of the collection consists of loose photographs, guest books, business records of the co-op organizations, and other loose scrapbook materials.
