An Inventory of the Collection
"In the latter part of September 1935 these ladies (Mrs. J. F. Ewing, Mrs. W. A. Nelson, Mrs. J. L. Brown, Mrs. Olin Culberson, Mrs. Tom Lemon, and Mrs. E. S. Redford) met at the home of Mrs. Euring, at the request of Mrs. Ewing and Mrs. Nelson, for the purpose of organizing a book club." And thus began what was then called The Book Review Club. The first official meeting was on October 8, 1935 where Mrs. Ewing was elected president and Mrs. A. B. Cox was elected secretary. A constitution and by-laws were drawn up and it was decided that the club should meet on the third Tuesday of each month.
Membership to the club is by invitation and members presented book reviews. The club meets from September through May with members serving as hostesses in their homes or at clubs. The final meeting in May is a tea or luncheon with a guest reviewer and invited guests of the membership.
The collection consists of 4 scrapbooks and 5 minute books for the Tuesday Book Review Club. The scrapbooks are dated October 8, 1935-1958, September 1959-May 1975, September 1973-May 1984, and September 2003-May 2009 and contain newspaper clippings, photographs, invitations, yearbooks, minutes and thank you cards. The minute books are dated September 1945-May 1947, September 1947-May 1949, September 1949-March 1954, September 1959-May 1966, and September 1996-May 2004. The minute books also contain membership lists.
