The Tuesday Nighters of Austin, Texas RecordsAn Inventory of the Collection
Administrative History“Shortly after World War II, a small group of veterans and their wives bought homes in a two block area in North Austin. Since there was no such thing as a second car, the young mothers had very little social life. They decided to form a club, which they did. As new members came into the club the membership spread to all parts of Austin.” (From a booklet published for 40th Anniversary celebration in 1987) The club was started in 1947 by Ruth Petty and Jean Viehe. In the beginning most of the members were in their 20's and lived in the same North Austin neighborhood and met in each other's homes for conversation and companionship. Many of the members say that when they started the club there was little money to go out to find entertainment so they had to make due with each other's company. Early names for the organization included Young Mothers Club, Northgate Homemaker's Club, and Mommies Ultra-Modern (MUM). The club continues to meet today and are still holding functions and traveling and taking cruises.
