Abstract: The Jones Glass Plate Negative Collection is comprised of 466 fragile glass plate negatives from about 1870 to 1900 and is a unique resource for the history of Texas. Most of the collection focuses on a variety of scenes from life in early Austin. There is some coverage of San Antonio and Houston.

Biographical Note

Hubert Jones was an Austin native and a WWI hero. He donated the collection to the AHC in the 1950's. Nothing more is known about him.

Scope and Contents

The Collection consists of 466 glass plate negatives from the late 19th century. The plates are in various sizes between 4x6 and 5x7. Some are stereograph negatives. The bulk of the collection are unidentified portraits. Those images that are identified are of the earliest period of Austin and photography.

Arrangement

The glass plates are labeled sequentially from J001-J466 but are otherwise are in no particular order. The collection has been digitized and cataloged.

Restrictions on Access

Users can view digital representations of the plates online at the Austin History Center Web site. An appointment must be made with the photo curator to view the glass plates.

Donor # listed is DO/1957/003, however there is no information on this collection in the file.

Processing Information

Each individual plate was rehoused, labeled and in some cases printed in the early 1990s. In 2009, the entire collection was digitized, cataloged and made available online thanks to a TexTreasures grant funded by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act.
