The Ulit Family have lived in Austin, Texas since William Ulit, Jr. moved to Austin
in 1891. William Ulit, Jr. was born January 12, 1865 in New Braunfels, Texas, the
son of Wilhelm and Philippine (Scheel) Ulit, who emigrated from Germany in 1855.
William Ulit, Jr. married Selma Hofmann in 1888 and from this union four children
were born: Antonio Bertha (1889-1969), Otillie Marie (1891-?), Harry Henry (1894-
1969), and Oscar Alfred (1896-1969). Antonio Ulit married Reinhold Pfeifer in 1909
and their marriage lasted 42 years until his death in 1951; they did not have any
children. Antonio (Ulit) Pfeifer did the accounting for Ed Pfeifer and Son
(later called the Pfeifer Music Company), a local Austin business that made
and sold pianos and organs, from the years 1919 through 1956. Oscar Ulit
married Idalee LeMaster in 1919 and had two children: Josephine "Jo" Estelle (1920-)
and Dorothy Leigh (1923-1971). Jo Ulit was active in social and cultural events in
high school and college, was a volunteer at Bergstrom Air Force Base
(originally called Del Valle Air Force Base, Bergstrom Field) during World War II,
and went to American Airlines stewardess training school in New York. Alfred Hofmann
was not a Ulit, but rather the brother of Selma Hofmann and maternal uncle to the
children of William and Selma Ulit.

Certificates, books, letters, photographs, drawings, scrapbooks, printed material,
financial material, cartographic material, and newspaper clippings (361 items)
document the lives, interests and times of the Ulit Family, 1889-1969, [bulk dates
1932-1944]. Arranged by the Austin History Center in five series representing
Antonio (Ulit) Pfeifer, Oscar Ulit and Harry Ulit, Josephine "Jo" Ulit, the
Ulit Family - General, and Alfred Hofmann, the records illuminate the lives and
activities of the various Ulit family members and relatives. The papers of the
Antonio (Ulit) Pfeifer contain the oldest material and spans the longest time
(1889-1969), but do not constitute a significant amount of the bulk of material
(only 16 items). The records of Antonio (Ulit) Pfeifer do contain some financial
documents (6 items) of the Ed Pfeifer & Son (later called the Pfeifer Music
Company), for whom Antonio (Ulit) Pfeifer kept accounting records for from 1919
through 1956. The papers of Oscar Ulit and Harry Ulit contain the second least
amount of material (2 items), but do contain a good pastel drawing of Oscar
and Harry Ulit as boys. The papers of Josephine "Jo" Ulit are the second
largest sub-series (158 items) and are comprised of three scrapbooks and loose
scrapbook material, which contain some of the most diverse information. The three
scrapbooks cover Jo Ulit's high school and college life at Austin High School and
the University of Texas, the early history of Bergstrom Air Force Base (originally
called Del Valle Air Force Base, Bergstrom Field) and Jo Ulit's experiences of
working there as a volunteer during World War II, and Jo Ulit's training as a
stewardess with American Airlines. The papers of the Ulit Family-General contain the
most material (184 items), including a large number of photographs (82 items) and
newspaper clippings (78 items). In the Ulit Family-General papers there are
invitations (1939, 1 item), photographs (1939, 11 items) and newspaper clippings
(1939, 3 items) documenting the Inaugural Parade and Reception of Govenor O'Daniel
in 1939. There is also material on Govenor O'Daniel in Jo Ulit's first scrapbook.
The papers of Alfred Hofmann has the least amount of material (1 item), but contain
an autograph book that includes inscriptions by friends in the Seguin-New Braunfels
area, a lovely miniature painting, and a short inscription by Antonio (Ulit) Pfeifer.
