Texas Presbyterian Educational Movement records, 1907-1908, 1922-1926
The Texas Presbyterian Educational Movement (aka the Texas Presbyterian Movement for Christian Education) was a state-wide campaign organized by the Synod of Texas of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (PCUS). The campaign was designed to help Presbyterian educational institutions and organizations in Texas financially, and was chaired by Daniel Allen Penick (1869-1964). The campaign ran from June 24, 1923 to July 15, 1924 and was successful in achieving its goal of $1,350,000 in pledges, but failed to collect and distribute the full amount.
The Texas Presbyterian Educational Movement records consist of 3.75 linear inches of legal documents, correspondence, and scrapbook material (1907-1908, 1922-1926) documenting the establishment and work of the project.
The legal documents and correspondence in this collection (.25 inch; 1993-016) primarily consist of bonds, stocks, estate transfers and related correspondence, primarily with J. S. (Joseph Simon) Baird (1869-1957), the Financial Secretary of the movement. The materials were transferred from “the Dr. D. A. Penick file” to the Synod of Texas by Secretary-Treasurer E.A. Dean in 1954. In 1993 the material was transferred to the Austin Seminary Archives after being discovered “in a cupboard” by the Texas Presbyterian Foundation.
The scrapbook (3.5 inches, 1996-050) contains newspaper articles from a variety of Texas newspapers and chronicles the Texas Presbyterian Educational Movement, as well as a fundraising drive by the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (PCUS) for schools within the denomination. Citation information is written across the top of the clippings. Some articles have a label with the name A. H. Seats (1004-1/2 Elm, Dallas, TX). Seats wrote an article about the fundraising project (“The Texas Presbyterian Movement for Christian Education”) in the Christian Observer. The scrapbook is very fragile and the front and back covers are missing. Please handle with care.
Materials are available by appointment only. Contact the archivist for details.
