Biographical note

Edward Bland Paisley (1890-1968), a Presbyterian pastor and educator, was born in 1890 in Arkansas. Paisley studied at Arkansas College, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, The University of Texas, and Yale. From 1910-1913, before entering Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary where he would earn his BD, Paisley taught school in Arkansas. Paisley was licensed and ordained in 1916, and had pastorates in various cities in Texas after serving as a chaplain and working for the YMCA during World War I. In the late 1920s Paisley’s posts in the church shifted to having an educational focus. Paisley was the Educational Secretary of the Executive Committee on Home Missions and a professor and later president of the Assembly’s Training School for Lay Workers among several other positions. In 1957 Paisley returned to Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary for one year as a Visiting Professor of Christian Education. Paisley died in 1968 in Pennsylvania.

Scope and Content Note

One and a half inches of essays and class work, and one Bible (1914-1955) record Edward Bland Paisley’s years as a student at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and his continued relationship with the institution. The materials are divided in three series: Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary Coursework, 1914-1916; Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary Memories, 1955; and Presbyteriana, 1928-1936. The first series, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary Coursework, 1914-1916, comprises the bulk of the collection. In this series are several pieces of coursework completed by Paisley while earning his degree at APTS. Though many of the documents are undated, they span all three years Paisley spent at the seminary. Of note are Paisley’s senior thesis and a well-worn Bible used by Paisley while at seminary, which is heavily annotated with Paisley’s own thoughts in addition to notes taken in class. The second series, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary Memories, 1955, is comprised of three documents: two writings containing fond and humorous reminiscences of Paisley’s seminary years, and a list of books Paisley proposed to donate to the APTS library. The essay “What Austin Seminary Did for Me” is available in the Stitt Library stacks at call # BV4070/A98/P2. The third series, Presbyteriana, 1928-1936, consists of a small binder of pamphlets and other material relating to the Presbyterian church that was presented by Paisley to the Austin Seminary Library in memory of his professor, Dr. Thormton Sampson “who first taught him the value of church history."
