Biographical note

Samuel Orr (1823-1882) was one of the first Presbyterian ministers in Arkansas. Orr was born in Jackson County, Georgia, August 12, 1823, and graduated from Oglethorpe University (1851) and Cumberland Theological Seminary, Lebanon, Tennessee (1854). He received a “Certificate of Licensure” to preach from the Presbytery of Cherokee meeting at Cartersville, Georgia (1855?).

From 1854 to 1858, Orr served as both domestic missionary and stated supply for the Presbytery of Cherokee and preached at several locations in Alabama. Around 1858, he moved to Arkansas where he served as one of the earliest Presbyterian preachers in the state. Under the Presbytery of Ouachita, he was first located at Tulip in Dallas County. Later he lived in Center Point where he preached and taught in Hemstead County (1858-1860). He was ordained Army Chaplain in Ouachita County (1864) and served as stated supply at Pleasant Grove Academy and Church in Dallas County (1863-1869).

In 1869 he became the first full time minister and teacher at Carolina Presbyterian Church and Academy in Dobyville, Arkansas, where he stayed until his death. Under Orr, the church grew to sixty-three members and two pastors. While at Carolina, he traveled extensively, serving as stated supply for Arkansas churches of Prescott, Marlbrook, Shady Grove, Princeton, and Arkadelphia.

In addition to preaching, Orr is rumored to have kept a general store and run a cotton gin. The 1870 census lists him as being a physician. Orr was marred to Ann Elizabeth Baird in 1857, and they had four children. He died suddenly on October 24, 1882 after an accident on a horse.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of 225 handwritten sermons written and preached by Samuel Orr, mostly in the area of Clark County, Arkansas, and spanning the years 1855-1858, 1864-1869, and 1870-1882. Most of the sermons are dates 1856-1957, when Orr preached at Mount Olivet and Sardis Presbyterian Churches in Alabama, and 1874-1882 when he served at Carolina Presbyterian Church in Arkansas. Other Arkansas churches where the sermons were preached include: Mount Hally, Center Point, Arkadelphia, Tulip, Royston, Fayetteville, Pleasant Grove, Washington, Greenwood, Princeton, Prescott, Shady Grove, Oak Grove, Marlbrook, Richland, and Hope. The sermons are arranged chronologically by the date they were originally preached. Orr’s sermons are not titled, but are based around particular chapters and verses of the Bible, indicated at the beginning of each manuscript. Although Orr usually documented the places where he preached each sermon, around 25% of the sermons are undated. The Orr papers also include one wedding ceremony, dated 1879.
