John Douglass Leslie papers, 1886 - circa 1935
John Douglass Leslie (1860-1935), Presbyterian minister and author, was born on June 1, 1860 in Statesville, North Carolina. In 1880, he attended Southwestern Presbyterian University in Clarksville, Tennessee. He then attended Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. He was ordained on September 13, 1883 and served at Atoka, Tennessee (1883-1886). He moved to Water Valley, Mississippi (1886-1894) and then to Texas, serving as pastor in Weatherford (1894-1898), Paris (1898-1903), Temple (1903-1904), Ballinger (1904-1911), and Cisco (1911-1921). Later, he served in the Synod of Texas and the General Assembly. He received the honorary degrees of D.D. in 1912 and LL.D. in 1923 from Austin College. He died on June 11, 1935 and was buried in Dallas.
The John Douglass Leslie papers are comprised of sermons, addresses, registers and an index relating to his sermons and ministerial work, as well as a typed manuscript on the history of the Presbyterian Church. The material is arranged in two series: Sermons and Addresses (1886-1927) and Creative Works (circa 1935).
The first series, Sermons and Addresses (1886-1927), contains Leslie’s sermons and addresses, an index to sermons, and two registers of sermons. The index to sermons lists topics/themes discussed in the sermons in alphabetical order. A numeral is assigned to each topic and the indexed sermons are numbered according to their theme. Unindexed sermons are grouped according to the first book of the Bible listed at the top of the sermon. The two registers of sermons document when and where each sermon was preached as well as the congregation’s reaction and Leslie’s thoughts. In addition, a listing of marriages and funerals performed by Leslie is included. Leslie recorded the date and location that his sermons were preached on the sermons; the earliest date listed is presumed to be closest to the writing of the sermon. The date ranges throughout the collection reflect this.
The second series, Creative Works (circa 1935), contains a manuscript for a book entitled History of the Presbyterian Church in the United States 1861-1935. After his death, this manuscript was donated to an unknown library by Leslie’s wife in 1937.
Materials in accession #2007-009 were originally held at the Montreat office of the Presbyterian Historical Society. They were transferred to the Austin Seminary Archives in 2007.
