Biographical note

Robert Houston Caldwell (1829-1900) was a Presbyterian pastor in Texas and Missouri. Caldwell attended Davidson College in North Carolina, and later attended Union Theological Seminary of Virginia from 1856-1859. Although he was licensed in 1859, he was not ordained until 1868. After his ordination, he served as pastor in Bethany, Bethesda, and Fifth Creek churches from 1868-1871. He then became stated supply for Greenwood, Forest Grove, and Carthage churches in Mississippi (1871-1977). He returned to Texas and was stated supply for Sulphur Springs and surrounding churches from 1877-1884. After this, Caldwell was without a charge. He moved several miles south to Reilly Springs, Texas where he served as stated supply from 1891-1892. In 1897, he left the Presbyterian Church, U.S. for the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He died in 1900.

The Robert Houston Caldwell Papers consist of a manuscript detailing the history of the Reilly Springs Presbyterian Church and a sermon on atonement (1891-1897).

Acquisition Information

Materials in accession #2007-009 were originally held at the Montreat office of the Presbyterian Historical Society. They were transferred to the Austin Seminary Archives in 2007.
