William and Alice Burger communion token collection, circa 19th century and undated
Biographical noteWilliam J. Burger (1913-2006), a Presbyterian minister, was born in Trenton, New Jersey. He served as minister at the New Boston Presbyterian Church in New Boston, New Hampshire from the early 1950s until the spring of 1955. Burger is the founder of M.A.T.E. (Mission at the Eastwood), a mission in central Maine formed for the benefit of the several towns in the area without a church. William Burger died in Welasco, Texas in 2006. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThe collection is comprised of four communion tokens which relate to the historical customs of the Presbyterian Church. It was customary for communion tokens to be handed out at the Wednesday night prayer meeting, making the bearer of the token eligible to receive communion on Sunday. Three of the tokens are New Boston Presbyterian communion tokens. The New Boston communion tokens are in the style of the tokens used in the first half of the 19th century. The tokens are rectangular, approximately ¾” x ½”, with “N.B” inscribed in the center and a raised border. The remaining token is unidentified, bearing the inscription “THE BUSH WAS NOT BURNED.” The unidentified token is round, approximately 1”. In addition to the inscription on the front, there is a burning bush and the initials RPC. On the back is the inscription “R.P.C. IN REMEMBERANCE OF ME.” The communion tokens were given to William J.
