Historical note

The Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity, Incorporated was founded on January 15, 1985 on the campus of Florida State University by founder Trevor Alexander Charles. Since that time, the fraternity has grown to include over 215 initiated members and five active chapters across the country. Being the first fraternity to be established in serving the needs of African American gay men, it now also serves the needs of other gay men of color. The organization provides community service to its members and the surrounding community and region. It is an outlet for gay man of color to express their leadership, scholastic ability, and identity to fellow members and professionals. In the year of its founding, the organization’s purpose was “to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards among black gay men.” The organization’s mission now includes: Health Awareness, Education, Political Empowerment, History and Heritage, and National Expansion to all of its members.Delta Phi Upsilon hosts a national convention, also known as the International Boule, during the second week of July in cities across the nation. It is an opportunity for members from all across the country to get together and discuss topics and issues that concern them and the organization.

The Delta Phi Upsilon Fraternity Collection consists of charter documents, constitution and bylaws, mission statement, photographs, manual, programs, and artifacts that document the history of the fraternity and its members.
