Rodney L. Griffin is a native Houstonian born in Hermann Memorial Hospital on 4 November 1946. He attended B.H. Grimes elementary school, Worthing High School and graduated from Jack Yates high school, along with an undergraduate degree in Mathematics from the University of Texas in Austin.

Mr. Griffin's parents are William L. Griffin and Margaret Griffin and they resided in the Sunnyside community during Rodney’s formative years. Rodney Griffin’s family experienced a meeting with Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. during one or Reverend King’s visits to Houston in 1957.
