Biographical noteMalinda Edmond, the mother of Faye Beverly Bryant, was born around 1906. She married her first husband, Willie Bryant, on December 19, 1929. After her first husband’s passing she remarried to Joseph Arthur Stinson on June 28, 1965. A former school teacher with the Houston Independent School District, she was a member of Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church where she was the president of the Missionary Society, a member of the choir and the Torchbearers Club. She was also the member of the NAACP, Open Doors Missionary Society, and the YWCA Garden Club. Her two daughters, Barbara Bryant Solomon and Faye Beverly Bryant, would also go onto to careers in education. Barbara Solomon would go on to become a faculty member of the School of Social Work at the University of Southern California, teaching and publishing articles that concerned empowerment and social work within the African American community. Her sister, Faye Bryant would become the first African American Deputy Superintendent for the Houston Independent School District (HISD) in 1998, under then Superintendent Rod Paige. She would retire from the school board in 2002 as Executive Deputy Superintendent after 42 years of service.
