Gladys Inez Forde was born in Ashdown, Arkansas on April 1st, 1920. She moved to Houston, Texas with her family because her father, Dr. George Patrick Alfonso Forde, had taken a position at the newly opened Houston Negro Hospital, now known as Riverside General. She graduated from Spelman College in 1940. She was a professor at Fisk University, teaching Dramatics and Speech for 41 years before her retirement in 1985. She moved back to Houston in 1985. Despite her retirement, she taught writing to students in the area who were interested in entering the health professions, as well as those preparing for the MCAT examinations up until the summer of 2004. Today she maintains her home and residence in the Houston area.
