Tests and Assessments Research Guide

Tests and other measures fall into two categories:

1) "Unpublished" tests, scales, questionnaires, and measures are those accessible to anyone, which makes them ideal for student use. Some of the most common sources of these measures include: test compendia and compilation volumes, journal articles and other formats such as ERIC documents, which can be identified using databases such as Health and Psychosocial Instruments, ERIC, and PsycINFO), and the Educational Testing Service (ETS) Tests in Microform collection, described below.

2) Tests that are copyrighted -- "published" -- are described and reviewed in the Mental Measurements Yearbook (the online database version covers the 9th -16th edition; find the print version editions 2-15 in PCL Stacks LB 1131 B9755). These published tests are also briefly listed on the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements site for quick reference.

IF the test appears in the MMY, one will need to meet criteria for qualification prior to purchasing and administering a test (contact information is included in the MMY entry on each test). For example CPP, Inc., provider of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®), outline various levels of qualification on their site.

Tests available in the UT Libraries

A limited collection of tests and/or test manuals (primarily dealing with education and special education) are available for special checkout at the Circulation/Reserves Desk. Request a particular test by call number at the Reserves Desk.  Circulation staff retrieve the test and provide the reader with a reading area behind the Reserves Desk.   Because the library must comply with publisher restrictions, there is NO PHOTOCOPYING of these works.

To determine whether a particular test is available :

•  Search for the title of the test/measure in the library catalog or search by advanced kewyword and limit to location PCPT;

•  Download a list of test and test manuals by title and call numbers.

Databases for Tests and Measures:

Mental Measurements Yearbook
Use the MMY for finding information about and reviews of PUBLISHED measures.
From the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements, the MMY database is a directory/review resource covering the most recent information and critical reviews of new a nd revised tests from the Buros Institute's 9th-15th Mental Measurements Yearbooks. The database describes more than 2,000 commercially available educational, personality, aptitude, neuropsychological, achievement and intelligence standardized tests. Each entry includes test name and classification; author(s); publisher, publication date; price; time requirements; score descriptions; levels; and intended populations. It does not contain tests!

Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI)
Use HaPI for finding UNPUBLISHED measures.
HAPI is a database which assists researchers in locating instruments used in the health fields, psychosocial sciences, organizational behavior, and library and information science. It can be used to find scales, questionnaires, tests and other measures that are in articles, books and compendia as well as articles about the use and development of these measures. Limit search results to sources containing the test or measure by selecting the limiter to: PRIMARY SOURCE. This database should be used to supplement PsycINFO, ERIC or CINAHL when searching for references to measures.

PsycINFO
Use PsycINFO to find articles about published and unpublished measures as well as actual measures included in articles and compendia sources. PsycINFO covers 1887 - present, indexing and abstracting the professional and academic literature of psychology and related disciplines. Its coverage is worldwide and includes references and abstracts of journals in 20+ languages, books, book chapters, and dissertations.

Use the thesaurus feature to search for articles on various types of types, for example:

  • Aptitude measures
  • Attitude measures
  • Performance tests
  • Personality measures
  • Employment tests
  • Intelligence tests
  • Inventories
  • Test construction

Find examples of assessments in journal articles by including the keyword APPENDED along with your keywords or subject descriptors describing the type of measure you seek, for example:
test OR assessment OR scale OR questionnaire OR measure OR survey
AND eating disorders [thesaurus headings of keywords describing your topic]
		AND appended
  • To increase your search results, try broadening your topic term and change the default fields to TX (ALL TEXT) using the drop down field limiters.

  • Choose the "TESTS AND MEASURES" field limiter available in the drop down menus adjacent to the search form if searching a particular test. The data in this field are test names, and the test names are listed if the test is used in the methodology of a study or a screeening instrument, or if the test is the subject of an article or literature review.
  • For more information on searching the "Tests and Measures" field in PsycINFO, see "In Search of: Tests & Measures", on page 5-6 of the Vol. 26 (2) Spring 2007 issue of PsycINFO News.

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health)
Use CINAHL to find articles in journals or book chapters that use or describe specific tests or measures in Nursing and Health.
CINAHL covers 1937 - present and contains indexing for over 3001 journals. Find examples of assessments in journal articles by including the keyword APPENDED along with your keywords or subject descriptors describing the type of measure you seek, for example:

test OR assessment OR scale OR questionnaire OR measure OR survey
		AND palliative care [your topic]
		AND appended
  • To increase your search results, try broadening your topic term and change the default fields to TX (ALL TEXT) using the drop down field limiters.
  • Limit the search using the REFINE Search Tab and select Publication Type: "Questionnaire/Scale", "Research Instrument", or "Research Instrument Utilization", or "Research Instrument Validation".

ERIC (Choose the EBSCO version for the instructions below, there is also a freely available version from the U.S. Government)
Use ERIC to find articles in journals and books as well as specific Eric Documents (designated with an ED#) that use or describe specific tests or measures in Education and Educational Psychology.
ERIC covers 1966 - present and is updated monthly. It contains over 700,000 citations covering research documents, journal articles, technical reports, program descriptions and evaluations, and curricular materials in the field of education. Find examples of assessments by including the keyword APPENDED along with your keywords or subject descriptors describing the type of measure you seek, for example:

test OR assessment OR scale OR questionnaire OR measure OR survey
		AND reading [your topic]
		AND appended
  • To increase your search results, try broadening your topic term and change the default fields to TX (ALL TEXT) using the drop down field limiters.
  • Limit a search with the REFINE Search Tab, selecting Publication Type: "Tests/Evaluation Instruments" as well as an Education Level limiter if desired.
  • See also a list of ERIC Documents containing assessment instruments authored by Helen Hough (UT Arlington). ERIC Documents are filed by ED Number (such as "ED413095") in the ERIC Documents Microfiche cabinet, PCL Level 1.

HINT: To search across PsycINFO, CINAHL and ERIC simultaneously click the CHOOSE DATABASE tab at the top any of the three and click the boxes to select the others. .
Shared subject headings in ERIC and PSYCINFO include: Inventories, Questionnaires, Rating Scales, Surveys, Psychological Assessment, Measurement, Test Reliability, Test Validity, Test Construction, Test Forms, Attitude Measures, Self Report, and many others.
