The indexing (with brief abstracts) covers scholarly history journals, books, dissertations and book reviews.

Corresponds to the printed index:
America History & Life Santa Barbara, Calif.:
ABC-CLIO PCL Stacks

V.1-10, v. 26-32 1954-63 to 1995,
-Q- Z 1236 A482
V.11-25 1974 to 1989 (book reviews published separately during this period: PCL Stacks -Q- Z 1236 A483 V. 11-25).

Chicano Database 1967-

Updated quarterly. Contains records for all types of material on Mexican-American topics and Chicanos. Since 1992, CDB describes material on the broader Latino experience, including Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and Central American immigrants.

Congressional Universe 1789- Detailed indexing by subject and names for publications of the United States Congress, various parts include the CIS Index (1970-present ) covering committee hearings, documents, and reports on bills, and committee prints;

  • Historical Indexes (1789-1969) and unpublished hearings indexing the Congressional Serial Set and unpublished committee hearings;
  • Publications (contains the full text links to all of the above materials plus indexing and full text of the Congressional Record from 1985 to present);
  • Bills (text & indexing) from 1989- which includes “bill tracking”;
  • Laws (Public Laws and U.S. Code versions in full text from 1988 to present) and “legislative history” of public laws from 1969-;
  • Federal Register (full text and indexing from vol. 45- 1980- to present) and Code of Federal Regulations (1981-current version);
  • Information on members (campaign finance, financial disclosure from 1980- to present, voting records, committee membership);
  • Committee rosters and schedules.
  • The indexing portions of the database have print equivalents.
  • Full text print versions can be obtained for nearly all materials except the unpublished hearings. Ask for reference assistance.
  • Tips: Searches are often performed on the entire text of a publication—placing limits will be necessary to obtain good results. Pay close attention to the dates of coverage and type of publication selected—many of these are drop-down menus. Names of principal sponsors and persons testifying can be searched.

    CQ Researcher 1991-

    Updated weekly. Explores a single "hot" issue in the news in depth each week. Topics range from social and teen issues to environment, health, education and science and technology. Every report is written by an experienced journalist and features comments from experts, lawmakers and citizens on all sides of every issue with numerous charts, graphs and sidebar articles. Valuable for its quick overviews of topics covered, this full text service DOES NOT correspond to the CQ Weekly [Report] and will not provide even as much detail as the yearly issues summaries in the CQ Almanac. The CQ Researcher's print version CQ Researcher (PCL Stacks H 35 E35 1987 V.1 through 1992) is designed to supply a quick journalistic background on issues and for use by debaters.

    Current Urban Documents 1972-

    Updated bimonthly. Index to reports and research generated by local government agencies, civic organizations, academic and research organizations, public libraries, school districts, and metropolitan and regional planning agencies from more than 500 major U.S. and Canadian cities. Reports available full text in PDF format. Paper indexes and microfiche of reports dating to 1972 are available at the Public Affairs Library.

    Tips: Few indexes include any city of county government publications. The collection of documents from cities is voluntary and therefore not systematic, so the coverage is unpredictable. Planning information, budgets and financial reports are strong points. This index is often one year behind in indexing receipts. Recent years provide city web links and PDF files for the full text of reports. For earlier years, use the { repeat here the info on Urban Documents Microfiche Collection in PAL ] Use the topic lists which can be combined with city, county or state for best quick results. Multiselection is allowed: hold down the control key and highlight desired selections. To clear a search use the new search button or click on “all” for each menu.

    Dates vary. Contains full-text of the Congressional Record, Congressional Bills, Public Laws, Federal Register, GAO Reports, and the United States Code. Official website for full-text U.S. Government materials. Links are maintained here to many federal agency websites.

    Tips: Use other databases to index the contents of these full-text publications. The Cybercemetery section is an archive of federal government official websites and publications which have disappeared from the actively-supported web. Documents on this site are not updated—the purpose is to preserve the text for public research uses. The Core Documents of U.S. Democracy contains the Constitution, Bill of Rights, Federalist Papers, Articles of Confederation, Emancipation Proclamation , Gettysburg Address, etc.

    Updated monthly. Contains over 380,000 citations to the publications of U.S. government agencies, including the U.S. Congress. The most comprehensive bibliography of publications of the U. S. government. Tips: This source gives the document numbers which are used as the call numbers to shelve most government publications that have not been cataloged. Help is available from the reference staff to interpret the entries.

    LegalTrac 1980-

    Updated daily. Index of articles from 800 legal reviews and journals and law-related articles from 1000 other periodicals. Full-text articles (some with graphics), 1989-present, from 40 periodicals. This index roughly corresponds to the print Index to Legal Periodicals PCL Stacks K 1 I5 V.13 1961/64-1989/90. A complete set beginning in 1908 is located in the Tarleton Law Library (K 33 I53).

    LexisNexis Academic Generally coverage being around 1985, full-text

    Updated continually. Provides both full-text and abstracts for a wide range of general-interest wire services, newspapers and magazines from around the world, including full text of the New York Times. Also provides access to company profiles and financial reports, government transcripts, trade journals and academic and legal databases. Use Legal Research to locate full text of state codes, state regulations, law review articles and extensive federal-level legal materials.

    Tips: For newspapers use the Guided News Search, choose sources and be sure to check the coverage available (click on About this Source), then choose Search this Source to limit to a single publication. This is not an official source for legal texts. Use Official websites for that purpose whenever possible.

    LexisNexis Congressional

    Updated daily. Provides access to information, including Congressional Indexes from 1789 to the present, from and about the U.S. Congress. LexisNexis Statistical Universe 1974-

    Updated monthly. Provides indexing and abstracts for federal, state, and international statistical publications as well as selected business and professional publications containing statistics. Approximately 20% of the federal statistical publications are available in full text. Includes all content from the American Statistics Index (ASI), Statistical Reference Index (SRI), and Index to International Statistics (IIS). Most of the statistics in the Abstracts section are available on microfiche in the Perry-Castañeda Library Microforms Collection at these call numbers: American Statistics Index - MCFICHE 4900, Index to International Statistics - MCFICHE 4901 and Statistical Reference Index - MCFICHE 4899. Microsoft Excel is required to view some full text documents.

    Tips: Indexing is detailed (abstracts describe data for each statistical table in a publication); look for the specific variables desired. Terms are sometimes tricky: e.g. employment data also contains the unemployment data; most immigration statistics are listed under aliens. Statistics from the U.S. government may often be in the U.S. documents collection; copy the Sudoc number. From 1980 on many U.S. statistical publications were published only in microfiche; U. S. government microfiche is not uniformly cataloged. Only the U.S. statistics that were NOT distributed to libraries (the non-depository fiche are indicated by a special symbol) are available in the ASI microfiche set. Indexes the U.S. population and economic census data. To limit a search to U.S. government statistics choose the ASI. To find United Nations statistics and data on other countries choose IIS. For associations, other private sources and some state or local government data limit to SRI.

    Updated regularly. Provides indexing and abstracts for over 360 (with full text for 320) military and general interest publications

    Tips: Contains many technical journals—mostly from 2000- present. Publications are mostly U.S. journals. Specific publications can be browsed from the “Publications” tab. Tips: This source gives the document numbers which are used as the call numbers to shelve most government publications that have not been cataloged. Help is available from the reference staff to interpret the entries.
