Title Diagnostic Writing Sample Assignment
Description This one-page writing sample should be a synopsis of a scholarly journal article the student has selected and read for their seminar paper. The synopsis should include the following:
  • at least one example of paraphrasing of text from the article
  • a direct quotation from the article
  • APA-style parenthetical citations
  • accurate APA-style reference to the article
  • a copy of the article itself with the paraphrased and quoted text highlighted
Use one of the article databases covered in class (AnthroPlus, Social Science Citation Index, AnthroSource) or another database related specifically to the area of the world you are studying (e.g., Bibliography of Asian Studies, Handbook of Latin American Studies) to find one scholarly article related to your topic. Print it out (or photocopy it), and read it. Write a summary of the article, and include the paraphrase, quotation, citations, and reference (as noted above)

Title Research Portfolio Assignment
Description Along with submission of their final papers, students will turn in a folder that indicates how they conducted and evaluated their research. It will include:
  1. One to three paragraphs describing their research process: which strategies worked and which did not; if and why the topic changed in the course of research; problems encountered in finding, evaluating, or using sources; reference sources and databases used; keywords and subject headings used in the databases and library catalog; and the most important thing the student learned about doing this kind of research.
  2. One to two-page printouts from two different article databases, listing the most relevant and recent articles found and the search statements used. This will indicate which databases were relied on most and were thought best for the topic, and what search strategies were found to yield the best results.
  3. If websites are included in the reference list, a printout of the site's opening page and a few sentences to justify the use of the website in the research paper (refer to Judging Quality on the Web at http://www.library.ucla.edu/yrl/reference/judging.htm
