Celebrating the Life

The Library and Information Science Collections of the The University of Texas Libraries exist primarily for the faculty, students, and staff of the School of Information, but also serve practicing librarians in the Austin area and beyond, and anyone interested in library and information science.

LIS Collection Development Policy

LISC Collections. The collections contain over 48,000 volumes and about 300 current subscriptions in the areas of library science, information science, bibliography, books and reading, digital libraries, library history, publishing, printing, the book arts, preservation and conservation, electronic information resources, and archives and records management. These monographs and bound journals are located primarily on the 6th floor in PCL, though, due to the multidisciplinarity of LIS, other LISC titles are located elsewhere in the Libraries where their call numbers naturally fall.

There are other parts of the LISC that are located elsewhere in the Libraries. Reference materials are located in the PCL Reference Area on the second floor of PCL. Current journals are located in the Periodicals Room on the second floor in PCL. Software and electronic data files are located in the Electronic Information Center, also on the second floor of PCL. LISC microforms are housed in the Microform collection on the ground floor of PCL.

Youth Collection. The Library and Information Science Collections also contain over 38,000 volumes in the Youth Collection. These books for children and young adults support the teacher and school certification needs of undergraduates at UT Austin, the curriculum for children's and school librarians in the iSchool, as well as those students and faculty with an interest in literature for youth. In addition, the collection is a source of recreational reading for hundreds of children and young adults each year.

LISC Reference Materials. Reference materials in the library and information science field, including major paper indexes to the periodical literature, are integrated with the PCL Reference Collection on the second floor of PCL. Library Literature and Information Science Full Text and Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA), the two primary indexes in the field, are available in electronic format via UT Libraries web pages to all current UT Austin students, faculty, and staff.

Reference assistance is provided in the PCL on the second floor of PCL.

Circulation of LISC Materials. LISC materials circulate according to the same guidelines as like materials in the Libraries. See the Borrower Services home page for details.
