Information Sources in the Profession: Selected Reference Works and Periodicals

Due to the breadth and multidisciplinarity of the field of library and information science, practically any area of scholarly endeavor contains works which may be used for reference or research by faculty, students, and practitioners in the field. This list is illustrative rather than exhaustive, but does contain most major works.

Annotated entries for over 1,000 references sources, mostly in the English language, but not exclusively. Covers from "the early 1900s to the first half of 1983." Prytherch, Ray. Information Management & Library Science ; A Guide To The Literature. 3rd ed., rev. Gower, 1994. (Issued in 1983 and 1987 under the title Sources of Information in Librarianship and Information Science.) Very full annotated list of library and information science literature. Arranged by subject and includes some narrative and bibliographies. Has a list of "key journals" and important organizations. Contains author, title, and subject indexes. PCL Stacks Z 666 P935 1994

Stevens, Norman D. Author's Guide To Journals In Library And Information Science. Haworth Press, 1982. Designed to help prepare prospective authors to publish in library science journals. Survey results present the publishing details, editors, subjects covered, and idiosyncrasies of the more important library science journals. Obviously dated, much of the information is not useful any longer. Periodicals are arranged alphabetically. PCL Stacks Z 666 S84 1982

Glaister, Geoffrey Ashall. Encyclopedia of the Book. 2nd ed. Oak Knoll Press, 1996. One volume encyclopedic work defining and explaining terms used with books and publishing, containing articles that vary from a couple of sentences to a couple of pages. Glossary Of Educational Technology Terms. 2nd ed. UNESCO, 1987. Dated dictionary of general educational technology terms including audio-visual, informatics, telecommunications, evaluation, and system analysis. Harrod's librarians' glossary and reference book : a directory of over 9,600 terms, organizations, projects and acronyms in the areas of information management, library science, publishing and archive management. 9th ed. International Dictionary of Library Histories. Fitzroy Dearborn, 2001. Institutional histories of the world's "principal" libraries. Includes essays on types of libraries and on libraries in different geographical areas. Has histories of 224 libraries. Includes a list of libraries described and has an extensive index. Indexes and abstracts

Education Index. H.W. Wilson Co. This is the education equivalent to Library Literature, both by H.W. Wilson. Useful for school libraries in particular. PCL Reference Collection Index Tables. L 11 E3

ERIC. Educational Resources Information Clearinghouse. Oryx Press. Federally sponsored clearinghouses which collect, index, and abstract materials in all fields of education, including libraries. Includes Resources In Education (RIE) and Current Index To Journals In Education (CIJE). RIE began in 1966 and covers documents such as reports, some books, conference proceedings, curriculum materials, etc. Is useful for libraries, especially some practical "how we did it good" reports. (LB 1028 R3832) CIJE covers the journal literature and has appeared since 1969. (LB 1028 C877) PCL Reference Collection Index Tables.

Information Science & Technology Abstracts. Document Abstracts, Inc. Major source for information science, but also includes traditional library science. Abstracts are grouped by broad subjects. Coverage from 1966. Indexes books, 400 journals, conference proceedings, reports, and patents in information science, documentation, and related fields. PCL Reference Collection Index Tables. Z 699 A1 D6 (We do not have access to the electronic version.)

Library And Information Science Abstracts (LISA). The Library Association. A major tool. Indexes and abstracts approximately 7,000 publications annually, including over 500 journals. Published in England, it is more international than Library Literature. Covers both traditional library science and information science but heavier on the latter. Arrangement by a faceted classification scheme makes it somewhat tricky to use at first. Coverage began in 1950 under the title Library Science Abstracts. PCL Reference Collection Index Tables. Library Literature and Information Science. H.W. Wilson Co. This is the primary source for finding periodical literature in library and information science. Stronger in traditional library science, but also covers information science; covers predominantly U.S. literature, but includes some international literature. Indexes major library and information science journals, films, books, and dissertations. Arranged by subject. The paper version provides coverage back to 1923. PCL Reference Collection Index Tables. Z 666 L69 The electronic version is available via UTLOL and includes full-text of many articles.

Annuals

AB Bookman's Yearbook. Bookman's Weekly. Specialist information for the book trade, especially the out-of-print trade. Contains articles and sections on the OP market, and directories of booksellers, publishers, remainder houses, auction houses, etc. Contains a useful subject index to publishers' specialties. Published since 1954. Latest edition in PCL Reference Collection; earlier editions in PCL Stacks. Z 990 A18

Advances In Librarianship. Academic Press. Contains 8-10 articles per year that describe "advances" made in the field during the year. The articles are long and scholarly with extensive bibliographical references. PCL Stacks Z 674 A4

ALA Yearbook Of Library And Information Services. American Library Association, 1976-1990. Was an update to the World Encyclopedia ... Contained a couple of lengthy feature articles followed by dozens of shorter articles arranged encyclopedia-style. Some bibliographic references. Good for statistical information. Annual Review Of Information Science And Technology (ARIST) American Society for Information Science. A major source. Contains 8-10 lengthy, scholarly articles with extensive bibliographies. Indexed by personal and corporate names, subject, geographical location, and the authors of works in the bibliographies. Published annually since 1966. PCL Stacks Z 699 A1 A65

Bowker Annual Of Library And Book Trade Information. Bowker. Contains both brief and longer articles with good bibliographies or references on a wide variety of issues, events, organizations, etc. in the library and book industry One of the best sources for statistics. Excellent quick reference source. Latest edition in PCL Reference Collection; earlier editions in PCL Stacks. Z 731 A47

Educational Media And Technology Yearbook. Libraries Unlimited. Contains articles recording the major issues, trends, innovations, people, and developments during the year in the instructional technology field. Library and Information Science Annual. In depth reviews of monographs, reference works, and selected periodicals published in the United States, Great Britain, Canada, and Australia/New Zealand. School Library Media Annual. Libraries Unlimited. A record of events, issues, and research of importance to faculty, students, librarians, and anyone involved in school library media. Encyclopedias

Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science. 2nd ed. Marcel Dekker, 2003. As with any encyclopedia, use ELIS to ease into your topic and gather some general information. The second edition is in four volumes with an online version that includes an updating service. (See Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science in the UTLOL Databases section.) The emphasis in the second edition is on changes in the field since the first edition, so there is more information about electronic information, technologies, and services. But there are also longer, encyclopedic articles about expected topics, (e.g., branch libraries in public library systems). Don’t forget the first edition consisting of seventy-three volumes (the original encyclopedia with annual supplements through 2003) for historical information and coverage of more topics about pre-electronic libraries and the emerging hybrid libraries. The second edition is in PCL Reference under call number Z 1006 E57 2003, and the original edition is in PCL Reference Collection under call number Z 1006 E57.

Wiegand, Wayne A. and Donald G. Davis, eds. Encyclopedia of Library History. Garland, 1994. The title is descriptive of the contents of this one-volume encyclopedia: history of libraries, library science, and information science. Includes bibliographic citations. PCL Reference Collection. World Encyclopedia Of Library And Information Service. 3rd ed. ALA, 1993. Good for a one-volume encyclopedic overview of the field. Covers the history of the field (up to 1993) by means of narrative information, biographies of famous people, and descriptions of major institutions. International in scope. Good place to begin research. Previous editions were titled, ALA World Encyclopedia Of Library And Information Service. PCL Reference Collection. Z 1006 W67 1993

American Library Directory. Bowker. Annual directory of libraries in North America. Arranged geographically. Entries contain information submitted by libraries, so they are uneven. Contains information about administrative staff, branch libraries, special collections, consortial memberships, with some statistical data. Includes an organization and personnel index, and a "library services and suppliers section." Directory Of Special Libraries And Information Centers. Gale Research. Guide to "more than 19,000 special libraries. Special libraries is defined broadly as libraries whose collections are limited to a subject area or format. Includes branch and departmental libraries at universities, special collections in public libraries, private company libraries, government libraries, and libraries in not-for-profit organizations. Arranged alphabetically by the institutional name. U.S. and Canadian libraries are treated extensively, while only the largest systems in other countries are included. Has a subject index. World Guide to Libraries. Saur. "The most comprehensive guide to libraries in the world," says the publisher. Its 42,632 entries contain the addresses, some statistical data, notices about special collections, and other data about libraries in 200 countries. Biographical Directories

ALA Membership Directory. American Library Association. Lists all ALA members with their mailing addresses; many include email addresses and their institutional affiliations, etc. Latest edition in the PCL Reference Collection Z 673 A5

International Biographical Directory Of National Archivists, Documentalists, And Librarians. Scarecrow, 2000. Biographical information about administrators of national-level libraries, archives, and documentation centers. Most information gathered by survey, while some comes from other sources. Contains listings for 192 countries with 205 entries. Indexed by institution, by person, and by place. PCL Reference Collection. Z 720 A1 I56 2000

Downs, Robert B. A Dictionary Of Eminent Librarians. High Plains Publishing Company, 1990. Biographies of individuals who shaped the "modern library world" by making major differences in librarianship. International in scope, but primarily U.S. and Western European. Issued by the American Library Association, the Canadian Library Association, American Society for Information Science, the Medical Library Association, Special Library Association, and the Information Industry Association. An international directory of tens of thousands of library and information professionals. Entries vary widely in the amount of information provided.
