Born, Dec. 31, 1917, in Darnius, Gerona, Spain.

His best-known works in English translation--The Cypresses Believe in God, One Million Dead, and Peace After War--chronicle events in Spain from the period of the Republic (1931-1936) through the Civil War (1936-1939) to the post-war era.

In these three novels, Gironella portrays his country through the Alvear family and their home in the author's native city of Gerona.
