  • type in keyword(s) for your topic in the databases or search the bibliographies listed below
  • if your article is full-text on-line in the database you can print, download, or e-mail the article (note: not all databases allow e-mailing)
  • if you only get the citation (author, title of article, journal title) and summary from the database, index or bibliography:
    • Click on the 'Find it @ UT' button, to see if the article is available in another database or available in paper format.

      OR

    • If there is no 'Find it @ UT' button, copy the source of your article, i.e. journal name, volume number, issue number, page numbers, author and title of the article. Then go to the Library Catalog and type in the title of the journal to check if UT owns the journal (DO NOT TYPE in the title or author of the article.

Provides searchable full-text access to the major African-American newspapers published in the United States during the 19th century.

Alt-Press Watch
1990s-current
Provides full-text coverage of newspapers, magazines and journals of the alternative and independent press in America. Includes a broad range of critical issues confronting contemporary society, such as ecology and the environment, grassroots organizing, labor, indigenous peoples, and public policy.

America: History and Life
1964-current
Contains citations with abstracts to social scienceand humanities literature on all aspects of U.S. and Canadian history, culture and current affairs from prehistoric times to the present. Coversbooks, book reviews, journals and dissertations. Also reviews films and video projects. It is also possible to search America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts simultaneously.

American Civil War: Letters and Diaries (CWLD)
1855-1875
Updated regularly (until completed). Includes approximately 100,000 pages of published memoirs, letters and diaries from individuals plus 4,000 pages of previously unpublished materials. Drawn from more than 1,000 sources, the collection provides in-depth coverage of all aspects of the war. More than 1,000 biographies will enhance the use of the database.

American Periodical Series
1741-1900
Contains 1000 magazines published between 1741 and 1900. Titles include Benjamin Franklin's General Magazine , the first American professional journals, and several consumer magazines still in publication, such as Vanity Fair , Harper's Magazine , and Ladies' Home Journal.

American State Papers
1789-1838
Full text online collection of the legislative and executive documents of Congress during the period 1789 to 1838. The collection includes documents that cover the critical historical gap from 1789 to the printing of the first volume of the U.S. Serial Set in 1817.

America's Historical Newspapers
1690-1922
Includes more than 1,000 U.S. historical newspapers published between 1690 and 1922, including titles from all 50 states.

Eighteenth Century Collections Online
1701-1800
ECCO contains 150,000 books published in the United Kingdom and the Americas, between 1701 and 1800. The collection is an ongoing project based on The English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC), a machine-readable union list of the holdings of the British Library, as well as those from more than 1,500 university, private and public libraries worldwide.

Gerritsen Collection: Women's History Online
1543 - 1945
An online collection of books, pamphlets and periodicals reflecting the evolution of a feminist consciousness and the movement for women's rights. Includes publications from Europe, the U.S., the United Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand.

HarpWeek (Harper's Weekly)
1857-1912
Provides electronic access to all issues of Harper's Weekly published between 1857 and 1912. Includes both search and browse capabilities. HarpWeek is designed for Netscape Navigator 3.x or above OR Internet Explorer 3.x or above at 800 X 600 screen resolution with Java, JavaScript and Cookies enabled. Printing pages (which are large -- the original size is 11" x 15.5") can best be accomplished by downloading the page to disk, then opening the page in an image-manipulation program.

HeritageQuest
Contains local history monographs for all 50 states, as well as Canada, England, and Ireland. Also includes the complete U.S. Federal Census, 1790-1930. Search by title, family name, geographic area, or subject.

Historical Abstracts
1969-present
Contains citations and abstracts of worldwide literature (excluding the United States and Canada) from approximately 2,100 journals and since 1980, books and dissertations on political, diplomatic, economic, social, cultural and intellectual history and related areas of the social sciences and humanities. Covers history dating from 1450 to the present. It is also possible to search Historical Abstracts and America: History and Life simultaneously.

Historical Statistics of the United States
Colonial times - ca. 2000. (Cambridge University Press)
Contains more than 37,000 annual time series of quantitative historical information covering virtually every quantifiable dimension of American history: population, work and welfare, economic structure and performance, governance, and international relations, all from the earliest times to the present.

History Cooperative
Full text of the Journal of American History and the American Historical Review as well as several other important history journals.

History of Science, Technology, and Medicine

Medieval Feminist Index - Web Access
1994-1997 (Haverford College)
Updated periodically. Covers over 350 international journals as well as book reviews and essays in books about women, sexuality, and gender during the Middle Ages (450 C.E. to 1500 C.E.). Subject coverage for gender and sexuality means that articles on masculinity and male homosexuality are included.
