  • type in keyword(s) for your topic in the databases or search the bibliographies listed below
  • if your article is full-text on-line in the database you can print, download, or e-mail the article (note: not all databases allow e-mailing)
  • if you only get the citation (author, title of article, journal title) and summary from the database, index or bibliography:
    • Click on the 'Find it @ UT' button, to see if the article is available in another database or available in paper format.

      OR

    • If there is no 'Find it @ UT' button, copy the source of your article, i.e. journal name, volume number, issue number, page numbers, author and title of the article. Then go to LIBRARY CATALOG and type in the title of the journal to check if UT owns the journal (DO NOT TYPE in the title or author of the article).

Updated monthly. Provides searchable full-text access to the major African-American newspapers published in the United States during the 19th century. Provides full-text coverage of newspapers, magazines and journals of the alternative and independent press in America. Includes a broad range of critical issues confronting contemporary society, such as ecology and the environment, grassroots organizing, labor, indigenous peoples, and public policy.

America: History and Life
1964- . Updated four times a year. Contains citations with abstracts to social science and humanities literature on all aspects of U.S. and Canadian history, culture and current affairs from prehistoric times to the present. Covers books, book reviews, journals and dissertations. Also reviews films and video projects.

American Civil War: Letters and Diaries (CWLD)
1855 - 1875 (Alexander Street Press) Updated regularly (until completed). Includes approximately 100,000 pages of published memoirs, letters and diaries from individuals plus 4,000 pages of previously unpublished materials. Drawn from more than 1,000 sources, the collection provides in-depth coverage of all aspects of the war. More than 1,000 biographies will enhance the use of the database.

Historical Abstracts - Web Access
1969 - present. (ABC-CLIO) Updated three - six times a year. Contains citations and abstracts of worldwide literature (excluding the United States and Canada) from approximately 2,100 journals and since 1980, books and dissertations on political, diplomatic, economic, social, cultural and intellectual history and related areas of the social sciences and humanities. Covers history dating from 1450 to the present.

Updated ten times per year. Indexes critical materials on literature, criticism, drama, languages, linguistics, and folklore. Provides access to over 3,500 journals, series, books, essay collections, working papers, proceedings, dissertations, and bibliographies. Coverage is international.

Oxford African American Studies Center

A comprehensive collection of scholarship focused on the lives and events which have shaped African American and African history and culture, coupled with sophisticated technology permitting precise search and browse capabilities. Features over 7,500 articles from Oxford's authoritative reference works, approximately 100 primary sources with specially written commentaries, over 1,000 images, over 100 maps, over 200 charts and tables, timelines to guide researchers through the history of African Americans and over 6,000 biographies.

PAIS International - Web Access
Updated monthly. Bibliographic index with abstracts covering the full range of political, social, and public policy issues. Topics covered include economic, political, and social issues, business, finance, law, international trade and relations, public administration, government, political science, and any topics that are or might become the subject of legislation.

The database covers selected journal articles, books, statistics, yearbooks, directories, conference proceedings, pamphlets, reports, government documents, and microfiche. More than 1,600 journals and over 8,000 monographs are indexed each year. Coverage includes documents published worldwide in any of six languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. The subject headings and abstracts are in English.
