Academic Search Complete
In addition to articles from magazines, journals and newspapers, find over 180,000 photographs and images covering current events, sports, maps, entertainment, the sciences and more. To search for images, click on the “images” link in the navigation bar at the top of the main search page.

Contains articles with images from thousands of scholarly and popular periodicals and newspapers, as well as books.  Images may include photos (color or black & white), illustrations, graphs, charts, tables, time lines and maps.

Digital images of visual material from many time periods and cultures. Focuses on, but is not limited to, the arts. Use the advanced search for more targeted searching.

Biography Reference Bank
Find photographs of famous people, both living and dead.

CAMIO
95,000 images that are rights-cleared for educational use.

DASE (Liberal Arts Digital Archive SErvices) Collection
Find images and make slide shows and RSS feeds. Collections span disciplines and topics in liberal arts.

Oxford Art Online (formerly Grove Art Online)
An encyclopedia of art covering prehistory to the present. Also includes links to color images in the Bridgeman Art Library (see below).

Daily Life through History
Go to the advanced search page to limit your search to finding images related to the social sciences, history and culture.

JSTOR 
Tabs on the search results pages allow you to quickly display images within articles or ARTstor images.

Gale Virtual Reference Library
This reference database contains several works that collect primary sources (including photographs) around a particular time period or area of study.

Find Images from Print Sources

Many articles and books contain images. Following are some tips for finding these images.

Images from Articles
Search a database in your subject area, or search a multi-disciplinary database for images. Many, but not all, databases, will indicate whether or not the article contains images.

Useful databases include:

• Art Abstracts/Art Index Retrospective – Art images
• Avery Index to Architecture Periodicals – Architecture images
• Reader's Guide Retrospective – images from popular magazines from 1890-1982
  
  

Images from Books

Search the Library Catalog for books on your topic.

• Tip: To see if a book contains images, open the full record by clicking on title and check the Description line for ill., which stands for illustrated.


• Tip: Look for books which primarily contain illustrations. To do so, type in your topic keywords and “pictorial works.”

1. How do I find maps?
   See Find a Map for images of current and historical maps from the UT Libraries.


2. How do I know if I can use the images I find for my project?
   Many of the databases and web sites will tell you their copyright policies. Also see the UT System Crash Course in Copyright.

There are some sites which provide free images, including:

• FlickR – images on all topics, many of which are available for free for non-commercial purposes. See “Additional Information” on image pages to check how you can use them.


• Finding Stock Images – list of sites providing free images.

Remember! Even if an image is available for free, you still have to cite it to avoid plagiarizing.
