Find Faculty Publications/Find an Article from a Citation

You have a citation from the faculty member's curriculum vitae and you want to find the full text:

Huston, James L. "Property Rights in Slavery and the Coming of the Civil War." Journal of Southern History 65.3 (May 1999): 249-86.

There are two methods for finding the full text of an article.

METHOD 1: Use the Find an Article from a Citation form

www.lib.utexas.edu > Research Tools > Database and Indexes to Articles

Step 1: Fill in as much information about the article as possible to generate a menu of full-text access options.

Step 2: In this example, the menu of full text options indicates the article is available in one library database: JSTOR. Check the date of the article citation against the dates of coverage in the database to make sure your article is included. In this case, the article you want is from 1999 so JSTOR should contain your article.

Step 3: When you click on the database link, a number of things may happen:

NOTE: Sometimes there are no online full-text options. In that case, click “Other Access Options” and, under “Shelf Copy,” click “Check: The Library Catalog” to search for the journal in print in the Libraries. See below for more information about finding print journals in the Libraries.

METHOD 2: Search the Library Catalog for the title of the journal

www.lib.utexas.edu > Research Tools > Library Catalog

Step 1: Choose the Journal Title search and type in the title of your journal in the first box.

Step 2: The Catalog will indicate if we own the journal in print and/or online. (If you don’t get any results, see Step 6 below).

Step 3: Find the Article Online
If you see “electronic resource,” this indicates that the journal is available online. Click the link to open a menu of Full Text Options. This menu lists the library databases which contain the journal. Confirm that the year and volume of the article you want is covered in the database.

Step 4: If the article is not available online, see if it is available in print.
Click on the title of the journal to open the full record. Scroll down to see a list of all the volumes and issues we have. You can jump directly to the volume you want by typing the number into the search box. In our example, we are looking for volume 65.

Step 5: Use the call number to locate the volume on the shelf.
We want volume 65, issue 2, which is available at F 206 J68. (To find out where this call number is located in the library, check the library floorplans.)

Step 6:
If your search yields no results, or if the title only appears to be available in print, search for the journal title in the second box on the Catalog’s Journal Title search page. This also checks for online journal access.
