Appealing Library Charges

A borrower wishing to question a library charge first discusses the charge with the circulation desk supervisor in the unit where the item was checked out. If resolution fails, the borrower may then make written appeal. Appeals must be filed within one semester from the end of the semester in which the charges were assessed. Appeal letters should include:

name
EID
current address
the item(s) for which charges are in question
the date(s) the transaction(s) occurred
the reason for appeal

and be addressed to:

Student Library Appeals Committee
or
Faculty/Staff Library Appeals Committee
The University of Texas Libraries
PCL 2.122
P.O. Box P
The University of Texas at Austin
Austin, TX 78713-8916

Campus Mail:

An  appeals form may be used to submit an appeal. This form may be printed, filled out, and mailed or delivered as described on the form.

The Committee will not consider an appeal based solely on inability to pay and/or disagreement with the assessment structure. Address such disagreement to the Interim Associate Director for User Services, Catherine Hamer.

The Student Library Appeals Committee is composed of University of Texas at Austin students. The Faculty/Staff Committee is composed of members of the University Library Committee. These committees meet infrequently, so resolution of appeals may take time. If the appeal is accepted for consideration, the amount under appeal is waived until the Committee reviews the appeal. Library records used by the Committee to reach a decision are open to appellants upon request.

Courtesy Borrowers appeal to Circulation Services Head Librarian, Suzanne McAnna.

The decision made by these authorities is final.

The Libraries Appeals Coordinator receives appeal letters, checks to make sure that the Committees have sufficient information to consider the appeals and notifies appellants and the owning library units in writing of the Committees' decisions. Appellants may communicate with the Coordinator to monitor an appeal's progress.
