TRANSLATE AND EMBOSS:
Duxbury for Windows, v.10.1 and Juliette Interpoint Brailler

  1. Turn on the Braille embosser:
It is located 3-4 feet directly to the right, if you are sitting at the computer workstation. The ON/OFF switch is located in the back, on the far right, in a well. Flip the switch to the left. You will hear a whirring noise and a short melody to let you know it is ready.
  2. Ensure the paper is aligned correctly:
    1. Set the embosser to offline mode.
On the right front of the embosser is a 16 button keypad. The top right key is a toggle key for online/offline. Press it once to have the embosser go into offline mode. A descending 2 tone melody will play.
    2. To align the paper automatically, go to the key pad and press the "2" button
(this is located in the third row and second column), and then press the "E" button (this is located in the 4th row and third column).
    3. The embosser will automatically return to online mode. You will know because an ascending 2 tone melody will play.
  3. Open the Duxbury Braille Translator program:
    1. Press the "window" key (second from left on bottom row of keyboard) to activate the start menu.
    2. Press the down arrow to move down the start menu to the "Duxbury Braille Translator" program.
    3. Press the "enter" key to start the program.
  4. Open the document you want to translate and emboss:
    1. Go to the Duxbury file menu using Alt-F.
    2. Press the down arrow to move through a list of commands to "open." Select "open" by pressing the "enter" key.
    3. The "Select Document File" window will open.
      • If you know the name of the file, type it in, tab to the "open" button and press enter.
      • If you do not know the name of the file, use the tab key and arrow keys to navigate the "Select Document File" window and find your file. Once you find your file, tab to the "open" button and press "enter."
      • If your file was created using another program, the "Import File Window" will open. This window allows you to select which template and filter settings you wish your document to be opened with. It usually will default to the type of file that it is, so no changes are necessary.

(Note: Duxbury has trouble with RTF files.)
    4. Press the enter key and the text of your file will appear on screen.
  5. Translate the document:
    1. From the file menu (ALT+F), find "Translate," and press "enter" to select it. The file changes to Braille form on the screen.
Note: The default translation mode is in Grade 2 Braille. To change this mode, press Alt-L, use your down arrow key to get to "Translation Codes" and press "enter." A list of "Translation Codes" will appear. Use the down arrow key to find the translation style you want and press "enter" to select it.
  6. Emboss the document:
    1. From the file menu (ALT+F), select "Emboss" to send the material to the Braille embosser. (Or, select "Print" to send the material to a standard printer).
    2. The "File Emboss" window will open. Using the tab key and down arrow, you may select the number of copies and the page range. The default is one copy of the entire document.
    3. After making your selection, tab to "OK' and press "enter."
    4. Wait until the embosser is finished creating your document. You'll know because the actual embossing process is very noisy.
