Finding Articles

Follow these steps to locate articles for your research.

1. Select an appropriate index.

The easiest way to find articles in magazines, journals and newspapers on a particular topic is to use a periodical index. The University of Texas Libraries provide hundreds of periodical indexes covering every academic discipline. To see the entire list, visit Databases and Indexes to Articles . We recommend the following multi-disciplinary indexes to start your research:

Electric Library
Contains articles from newspapers and news wires, periodicals, TV & radio program transcripts, literature and reference books, as well as photos, and maps.

Expanded Academic ASAP
Search over 2300 magazines and journals for articles on your topic.

Newspaper Source
Search for articles in over 150 different Texas, U.S. and international newspapers at the same time.

If you are having difficulty accessing these indexes from your computer, you may need to modify your browser to access the library's proxy server .

2. Enter your search.

Combine keywords using AND to find articles on your topic. For example, to find articles on online relationships, you might search:

romantic and relationships and Internet

All periodical indexes will list citations. In addition, some will provide abstracts or brief summaries of articles, while others will contain the article in its entirety. These recommended indexes may contain the full text or entire content of some articles.

3. Locate the article.

If the full text is not available, you will need to locate the article in print in the library or in another online source. Search for the title of the periodical in the Library Catalog to identify its library location.

For example, if you were looking for the article:

Drucker, Peter. "Beyond the Information Revolution." The Atlantic Monthly Oct. 1999: 47-48.

You would need to search for the title atlantic monthly in the Library Catalog in order to find which library owns that magazine and its call number. Before going to find the magazine on the library shelf, make sure to check in the Library Catalog to verify that the library has the volume and date of the journal that you need.
