Students get a room of their own in the PCL

The University Federal Credit Union Student Learning Commons opened in the Perry-Castaeda Library to much fanfare in August, and already the room has become a regular comfort zone for library users....

The University Federal Credit Union (UFCU) Student Learning Commons is a state-of-the-art community study area in the Perry-Castañeda Library (PCL) on the University of Texas campus made possible through a generous gift by the University Federal Credit Union.

Opened in August 2007, the Student Learning Commons was the first significant renovation of the PCL since its dedication in 1972.

The room, located on the ground floor of the library, reflects a change in approach by the University of Texas Libraries towards creating spaces that meld current technologies with environmental comforts in a way that accommodates the needs of the modern library user.

The Student Learning Commons features softer lighting from a variety of uniquely-styled fixtures, free-floating leather and fabric lounge seating, lower periodical shelving to permit unobstructed views throughout the space and study pods for group/collaborative work, and it is populated, as well, with an array of power sources and WiFi for laptops, media and communication devices.

The Student Learning Commons is also available as a community events facility for use by University student groups. With a modularity that allows for simple spatial restructuring and an available digital projector and screen, the room is ideal for serving a dual purpose for both the individual and group user.

As the Libraries modify and renovate other facilities to adapt to modern constituent needs, the UFCU Student Learning Commons will serve as a model for years to come.
