As of 2001, Miami-Dade is implementing plans begun under a county initiative to attract high technology industries. In effect, the county is attempting to shed its traditional economic base of service and transportation industries for knowledge-based ones. However, questions remain about the compatibility of the county's economic ambitions with that of its reality. Specifically, can the local labor market meet the needs of the target industries? Moreover, does the county have the ability to shed its traditional economic profile of a low-skill service/transportation provider to a highly skilled information-based economy?
