Government leaders and citizens in Texas should be aware that a growing reliance on information technology and the Internet has left the State's infrastructure and sensitive data increasingly vulnerable to security incidents and that could undermine citizen confidence and damage government assets. This policy report explains the growing challenge of information technology security; looks at common security tools and vulnerabilities; examines the current climate of information security in Texas state government; and advocates the creation of a central security office to better address information technology security issues.
