This report examines the retention of engineering and information technology jobs within the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Current data extracted from exit interviews indicates that employees leave due to "personal reasons not related to the job." This report argues that employees may not disclose their true reasons for leaving, thus hindering TxDOT efforts in employee retention. A survey of former TxDOT employees found that indeed employees generally left due to "retirement" and "inadequate salary" reasons, not personal reasons. In addition, a survey of current employees revealed that generally employees stay at TxDOT because of benefits and job security. Based on these findings, TxDOT can enhance their retention policies and practices.
