Latino Education and Treatment: An Approach to Decreasing Juvenile Crime

This paper will illustrate the issues and trends that juvenile justice agencies are facing today, with a focus on Hispanic overrepresentation in the system and their unique needs. The new Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Programs created by the Texas Legislature will be examined to determine their original intent, followed by an analysis of a model program in Austin, Texas, developed by the non-profit organization, Southwest Key program. This program will be highlighted as a model program that incorporates education, treatment, and ethnic diversity in its programming.
