This report will explore the strengths and weaknesses of the mainstream argument for drug prohibition and will argue that its endurance is attributable in part to its appeal to both national self-interest and ideals. The report will further explore the mainstream arguments for drug legalization or decriminalization which generally center on the pragmatic, self-interested, economic arguments. Finally this report will argue that what is necessary to truly counter the prohibition argument is a reasonable proposal that is based upon both idealism and self-interest, like the prohibitionist position.
