In season 3, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" ran an episode called "Snuff." This show, about a case of murder that turned on the identification of a strain of HIV, was an example of entertainment ripped from the headlines. Just a few years before, Hillis was an expert witness in the attempted murder case that inspired the episode. Using scenes from "CSI," and from the "Forensic Files" episode that outlined the case, Hillis gave behind-the-scenes details on the preparation of the prosecution's case and translated the workings of phylogenetic analysis for the layperson.
