Using Default Windows XP CD-burning feautures

Step 1:

Please open a Windows Explorer window (double-click the 'My Computer' shortcut on the desktop) and copy the data you wish to put on a CD to the X: drive of the virtual machine. This drive is named 'Burn to CD' (if you are not sure what the term virtual machine means, please look for a handout in the tray next to this workstation). In the picture below, a textfile named 'burn_to_cd.txt' is used as an example):

Step 2:

Hit the 'Right Alt + Enter' key combination, where 'Right Alt' refers to the Alt key to the right of the Space bar. This will minimize the virtual machine environment from the full-screen mode to a window that takes up approximately half of the screen. You will be able to see the desktop of the host machine. You will see something similar to the picture below:

Step3:
On the desktop of the host machine, please double-click on the 'Burn to CD' shortcut, located in the upper left-hand corner. This will bring up an explorer window, containing the files you saved in Step 1 of these instructions. In the picture below, the explorer window contains the file we saved in Step 1 (burn_to_cd.txt):

NOTE: So far, we have transferred our file(s) to the host machine. The host machine is a regular Windows XP computer, and hence we can use the standard Windows XP "Drag-and-Drop" feature for recording CD's. The remaining steps describe how to use the 'Drag-and-Drop' feature, so if you are already familiar with it, you do not have to read the remaining steps.

Step 4:

If you have not already done so, please insert a writable CD into the CD-ROM drive before proceeding with this step.

In the 'Burn to CD' window that you opened in Step 3, select all the files/folders that you want to burn to your CD and right-click one of the selected files. From the dialog menu that appears, choose 'Send to' and then select drive W:

Step 5:

Navigate to the W: drive using a Windows Explorer window. If you don¡¯t have a Windows Explorer window open on the desktop, please click on the 'Burn to CD' shortcut to bring one up.

Once you are at the W: drive, you will see the following message inside the window above your files: 'Files Ready to be Written to the CD'.

Step 6:

Right-click anywhere on the white space (but not on a file) inside the CD folder under 'Files Ready to Be Written to the CD' and choose Write these files to CD from the dialog menu:

Step 7:

The CD Writing Wizard will come up, prompting you to choose a name for you CD. Follow the Wizard's help screens to finish saving your data. At the end, given that your data has been saved successfully, you should see your newly saved file(s) among the files listed under 'Files Currently on the CD':

Step 8) You will now need to change back to the virtual environment. To do so, click with your mouse anywhere within the virtual machine window and then hit the 'Right Alt + Enter' key combination, where 'Right Alt' refers to the Alt key to the RIGHT of the Space bar. This will convert the virtual environment back into the full-screen mode.
