Visual Resources Collection
The Visual Resources Collection, Fine Arts Library, The University of Texas at Austin, consists of two important collections of images of art, architecture and design: an important archival collection of some 550,000 slides, now housed at the Collections Deposit Library on the south side of campus, and a collection of over 63,000 digital images which are available for viewing by all UT Austin faculty, students and staff on DASe (Digital Archive Services), one of the University’s digital repository sites. The Visual Resources Collection (VRC) also oversees the uploading into DASe of the metadata and digital images of objects from the Blanton Museum and from other Collections here at the University such as the Art and Art History Collection and the Landmarks works of sculpture, as well as works by UT’s own Art Faculty.
Since its formation in the 1940s, the Visual Resources Collection has sought to meet the unique visual needs of the faculty, students and staff at UT Austin. Our current goal is to keep building this collection of high-resolution digital images with searchable, accurate metadata to be used for current classes and research as well as to ensure a digital legacy of images of art, architecture and design for future scholars’ endeavors.
All images that the VRC scans are stored and made available on DASe. All faculty, students and staff in the Department of Art and Art History, as well as those in other departments on campus who seek high-quality images with searchable metadata, may order images from the VRC for educational use. Here is a sampling of our services:
- Digitize images for lectures
- Assist you with locating images
- Offer DASe and ARTstor training and tips
- Show you resources for citing images
- Arrange to view the slide collection
For questions about our scanning policies see digital Image Policies.
