SRV statue

The maquette of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was created by New England sculptor Ralph Helmick. The piece was a finalist in the 1997 Martin Luther King Sculpture Project.

In addition to creating the MLK maquette, Helmick is the creator of another iconic sculpture found here in Austin: the Stevie Ray Vaughan Memorial. A collaboration between Helmick and landscape architect Tom Randall in tribute to Austin's own legendary bluesman, the sculpture lives at Auditorium Shores.

Ralph Helmick received a BA at the University of Michigan, and an MFA in Sculpture at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Tufts University in Medford, MA. Mr. Helmick is the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts/New England Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. He has taught extensively at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina.
