The Fine Arts Library is an open stack library. Materials on reserve and in special collections are available on request from the Circulation Desk.
Certain categories of materials are limited to use in the library. Materials are loaned according to policies described in the Lending and Use Code available in all public service units of the University of Texas Libraries. The Fine Arts Library has additional loan periods and policies for special materials. The Circulation Desk phone number is (512) 495-4481. If you return items late, damage items, or lose them, you will be assessed fines and/or fees.
If you would like to keep items past their due date, you can renew them either at the Circulation Desk or online. Only items with loan periods of one week or longer can be renewed online.
If you would like a book that is checked out, you can recall it either online or at the Circulation Desk. You will be notified as soon as it is available (typically within two weeks).
Books and scores may be returned at the FAL Circulation Desk, at the Circulation Desks of other University of Texas Libraries, and at external book drops. The Fine Arts Library has external drops for books and for media located at the second-floor entrance on the west side of the building. Media can also be returned at any library. Reserves materials must be returned to the Fine Arts Library Circulation Desk.
Lists of items on reserve are filed under instructor name and by course number in the University of Texas Library Catalog. Books and media placed on closed reserve are available for limited loan periods at the Circulation Desk.
FAL has five rooms that can be reserved for one-off or semester-long classes. Preference is given to classes offered by the Schools and Departments of the College of Fine Arts. The rooms range in size from 8 to 48 seats. The room numbers are DFA 4.102, 4.106, 4.112, 4.114, 4.116 and their calendars can be seen in Outlook. To request a reservation please use this form.
Reference and Instructional Services
Reference assistance is available from trained personnel most hours the library is open. Librarians may also be consulted by appointment. For reference assistance, please inquire at the Circulation Desk or contact a subject specialist. Tours and group instruction on research methods and the use of library materials are offered. Please consult a subject specialist for tours or instruction.
Film and Video
This service allows faculty to schedule specific films and videos for class viewings. The form is located here.
Carrels and Doctoral Study Rooms
A total of 60 individual study carrels on the 5th floor are available to enrolled graduate and PhD students. Due to the limited number of carrels, library staff ask that any student not using their carrel please notify the circulation desk staff so they can check it out to another interested student.
Doctoral Study Rooms
A total of 8 individual study rooms on the 5th floors are available to enrolled Ph.D. students. Due to the limited number of rooms, there is often a waiting list. Only students who have already advanced to candidacy for the doctoral degree are eligible for study wait list and occupancy. Studies may not be renewed beyond two calendar years from the initial assignment (i.e., total assignment cannot exceed 6 semesters -- including summer as 1 semester).
Use of Materials in Carrels and Studies
No library material can be retained in any carrel or study if it is not checked out. Uncharged materials will be removed. The Fine Arts Library assumes no responsibility for any items left in any assigned space. Checked-out material may be kept in studies, but there is no specific "study" charge. Inter-Library Loan materials should not be left in studies. All checked out material is the responsibility of the study holder, and not of the Fine Arts Library.
Clearing Carrels and Doctoral Study Rooms
If an assignment of library space is not renewed, the space must be cleared of any library and personal materials by September 8, January 2, or June 10. If space is not cleared by this deadline, the following actions will be taken to prepare for the next assignee:
- Library materials will be removed, discharged and returned to the shelves.
- Personal items will be removed and sent to the UTPD Lost and Found. (471-4441)
- Lost keys will be charged at $15 each, plus a $25 processing fee.
