During spring months, this perennial forms almost solid carpets along roadsides in many parts of the western half of Texas. However, it seldom grows in pastures and rangeland on the other side of the fence, because it is an "ice-cream plant" relished by deer and livestock. It is named in honor of George Engelmann, a St. Louis botanist who collaborated with Texas plant collector Ferdinand Lindheimer in the mid-1800s.
